Για το τι λέει η Gigabyte δεν με νοιάζει. Απλά έχω χρέος να post-άρω τα Press Release, για αυτό το έβαλα :)

What About Current Sandy Bridge Owners?

On its conference call to discuss the issue, Intel told me that it hasnʼt been made aware of a single failure seen by end users. Intel expects that over 3 years of use it would see a failure rate of approximately 5 - 15% depending on usage model. Remember this problem isnʼt a functional issue but rather one of those nasty statistical issues, so by nature it should take time to show up in large numbers (at the same time there should still be some very isolated incidents of failure early on).

The problem in the chipset was traced back to a transistor in the 3Gbps PLL clocking tree. The aforementioned transistor has a very thin gate oxide, which allows you to turn it on with a very low voltage. Unfortunately in this case Intel biased the transistor with too high of a voltage, resulting in higher than expected leakage current. Depending on the physical characteristics of the transistor the leakage current here can increase over time which can ultimately result in this failure on the 3Gbps ports. The fact that the 3Gbps and 6Gbps circuits have their own independent clocking trees is what ensures that this problem is limited to only ports 2 - 5 off the controller.

Intel Identifies Chipset Design Error, Implementing Solution

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 31, 2011 - As part of ongoing quality assurance, Intel Corporation has discovered a design issue in a recently released support chip, the Intel® 6 Series, code-named Cougar Point, and has implemented a silicon fix. In some cases, the Serial-ATA (SATA) ports within the chipsets may degrade over time, potentially impacting the performance or functionality of SATA-linked devices such as hard disk drives and DVD-drives. The chipset is utilized in PCs with Intel's latest Second Generation Intel Core processors, code-named Sandy Bridge. Intel has stopped shipment of the affected support chip from its factories. Intel has corrected the design issue, and has begun manufacturing a new version of the support chip which will resolve the issue. The Sandy Bridge microprocessor is unaffected and no other products are affected by this issue.

The company expects to begin delivering the updated version of the chipset to customers in late February and expects full volume recovery in April. Intel stands behind its products and is committed to product quality. For computer makers and other Intel customers that have bought potentially affected chipsets or systems, Intel will work with its OEM partners to accept the return of the affected chipsets, and plans to support modifications or replacements needed on motherboards or systems. The systems with the affected support chips have only been shipping since January 9th and the company believes that relatively few consumers are impacted by this issue. The only systems sold to an end customer potentially impacted are Second Generation Core i5 and Core i7 quad core based systems. Intel believes that consumers can continue to use their systems with confidence, while working with their computer manufacturer for a permanent solution. For further information consumers should contact Intel at Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Server and Embedded Processor Technology - Intel on the support page or contact their OEM manufacturer.

For the first quarter of 2011, Intel expects this issue to reduce revenue by approximately $300 million as the company discontinues production of the current version of the chipset and begins manufacturing the new version. Full-year revenue is not expected to be materially affected by the issue. Total cost to repair and replace affected materials and systems in the market is estimated to be $700 million. Since this issue affected some of the chipset units shipped and produced in the fourth quarter of 2010, the company will take a charge against cost of goods sold, which is expected to reduce the fourth quarter gross margin percentage by approximately 4 percentage points from the previously reported 67.5 percent. The company will also take a charge in the first quarter of 2011which will lower the previously communicated gross margin percentage by 2 percentage points and the full-year gross margin percentage by one percentage point.

Gigabyte Announces 6-series Motherboard Replacement Program - AnandTech

The key messages are as follows:

1) Gigabyte has stopped shipment to and recalled any unsold 6-series B2 motherboards from distributors and dealers.

2) Any Gigabyte 6-series B2 motherboards that have already been sold will be accepted back for replacement with a B3 board, regardless of condition. I asked Gigabyte if this meant that non-working boards could also be returned, Gigabyte said yes - all eligible 6-series models with B2 stepping chipsets will be accepted back.

3) Gigabyte says that it should have 6-series B3 chipsets in April.

4) The replacement program will happen at the dealer/distributor level. You will have to exchange your board at the location you purchased it from.

5) Customers can either exchange their board (you'll have to wait until April for this to happen) or you can get a full refund sooner (immediately?). Gigabyte recommends going the refund route as that gives you more flexibility for what you want to do next.

6) The replacement board you get will be a brand new motherboard based on the B3 chipset. Gigabyte isnʼt ready to disclose if there will be any new design features to these boards as well.

7) The cost of the product exchange will be handled by Intel and Gigabyte (presumably Intel is footing the entire bill).

Μια χαρά, πιστεύω θα έχουμε το ίδιο και από τους άλλους κατασκευαστές μητρικών.

Δεν ξέρω αν είναι θέμα με το chipset αλλά εμένα το Raid5 που είναι στις 4 πόρτες με το πρόβλημα, μου το έκανε πτάνα... Μετά τις πολλές αποτυχημένες προσπάθειες να δουλέψει, κάποια στιγμή το έβγαλε σε κατάσταση rebuild. Όταν τελικά μετά από 13 ημέρες κατάφερα να στήσω το μηχάνημα, και μπήκε Win, ξεκίνησε το rebuild το οποίο όμως γινόταν υπερβολικά αργά! Μου έχει τύχει πάλι να σπάσει το raid, και έκανε full rebuild σε 6-7 ώρες. Το άφησα Δευτέρα προς Τρίτη να κάνει rebuild και Τρίτη απόγευμα στις 7 ήταν μόλις στο 3% !!!

Με τα πολλά, μετά από 2-3 ώρες σπάει το raid και μου βγάζει τον ένα δίσκο ως failed. Μπαίνω bios, τον βγάζω, τον βάζω ξανά και bootάρω. Μπαίνει στα Win, αρχίζει πάλι το rebuild και περιμένω.... Ανοίγω όμως κάποια στιγμή το δίσκο και βλέπω ΟΛΑ τα folders με λουκετάκι!!! Ανοίγω ένα ένα να δω τι γίνεται και τα δεδομένα φαίνονται κανονικά, εκτός από το My Music όπου δε με αφήνει καν να το ανοίξω. Πάω να σβήσω τα temps και μου λέει ότι το Recycle Bin είναι corrupted!!!

Επιλέγω να κάνει έλεγχο στο δίσκο και κάνω reboot. Αυτό εχθές στις 10 το βράδυ... Σήμερα το πρωί που έφυγα δεν είχε τελειώσει ακόμα το checkdisk...

Αόμματοι ήταν στην Intel όταν έδιναν τα 6 chipsets για κυκλοφορία ???

PS. Μήπως όσοι έχουν P67 αυτή τη στιγμή μπορούν να τρέξουν μια το HDTune να δούμε αν είναι όντως μεμονωμένα τα περιστατικά ???
