Recommended Posts

Aten-Ra: What IPC improvements will we see against Deneb or Thuban in single Thread and Multi thread applications?

AMD: Bulldozer is a new and radically different core architecture making it impossible to draw IPC parallels to any previous design. With the design of the AMD FX, we focused on offering the highest possible instructions per watt. AMD FX is designed with current and future workloads in mind. At the same time, we have added the new instruction sets and as improvements are realized in applications and operating systems (like the Windows 8 scheduler improvements), we believe performance will increase.

Note: In older apps, either compiled with an older compiler, or those using older instructions will see FX at a disadvantage. Again this was a design decision. Design for todayʼs apps and the future was the engineering mantra.

HardwareCanucks

As you can see, the FX-8150 does indeed demonstrate its superiority in all the highly multi-threaded applications, as it clearly should since it's an eight-core chip competing against a four-core one. However, it gets trampled in more lightly threaded programs, as well as most games. The exception to this is in the very latest games where the Zambezi chip still loses, but by an insignificant amount. Based on our talks with AMD, they firmly assert that it is in these newer pieces of software that Zambezi's supposedly forward-looking architecture can really shine. When compared with the $315 Core i7-2600K, the FX-8150 comes out looking even worse, since the four-core/eight-thread HyperThreading-enabled Intel chip can more than match the Zambezi's multi-threading performance in most applications.

Overall then, while Zambezi might have been a very capable competitor to Intel's Bloomfield LGA1366 and Lynnfield LGA1156 series, its allure whithers when placed head-to-head against modern-day Sandy Bridge processors.

When compared to AMD's previous flagship four-core Phenom II X4 980, the FX-8150 obviously comes out looking quite rosy, except for the few instances where its single-threaded performance is revealed to be lacking. However, when compared to the Phenom II X6 1100T things get cloudy again. It is hard to find value in the $245 FX-8150 when the X6 1100T retails for a mere $190. That is almost 30% cheaper and you are getting very similar performance in all but the most highly-threaded applications. With 3 to 4 years of development time, a new manufacturing process, and twice as many transistors as a Phenom II X6, you can't blame us for being slightly disappointed. Heck, the FX-8150 doesn't even consume less power than the Phenom II X6 1100T.

Our readers will be thoroughly disappointed with the overall lackadaisical showing of the new AMD FX-8150 today, especially with the ridiculous overclocked power consumption figures on load. The review team took great lengths to check and recheck our benchmarks and methology and even used different motherboards, bios versions, drivers and chips, but the results remained stubbornly the same. People living in denial/Spin doctors/I have 0 friends may argue that the results are "good enough" or that our software suite is "not optimized for the new instruction sets" - you really can't build a competitive solution only for the future and expect every piece of software from Angry Birds to business mission critical applications to operating systems to be recompiled and tested overnight just to support a niche architecture. Moreover not every practical workload can utilize the new instruction sets without significant algorithmic changes and more crucially most software applications today remain largely single-threaded.

Clock for clock in multithreading heavy scenarios the FX-8150 is typically behind the quad core i7-2600K by ~20%, and in single-threaded workloads it gets totally annihilated. Overclocking was also nothing to shout about, as it needed a significant voltage bump to even reach a (prime stable) 4.7GHz on noisy air. Bluntly, the performance we are seeing from the 8-core FX-8150 today is only marginally better than last year's high end quad core Intel i7 "Nehelam" and AMD's own Phenom II "Thuban" 6-core offerings, and definitely not a "i7-990X killer" as hyped over the last few months. No disrespect intended to the record holders but disabling cores to achieve high frequencies is just going to confuse unsuspecting buyers and split-second CPU-Z screenshots is not a measure of true stability.

Pricing wise (US$245) it is also more expensive than the Intel i5-2500K (US$219.99), which should be on par or ahead performance and overclocking wise despite its 4-core/thread handicap. However, in some markets a sub US$100 water cooling solution will be bundled, making it better value for money and frankly quite necessary considering its humongous power output while overclocking.

You have been able to see that the FX 8150 mostly is competing with the Core i5 2500 (which costs 180 EUR by the way). Once multithreading kicks in well, performance quickly rises and you'll see Core i7 2600 (260 EUR) performance. Surprisingly enough even the Phenom II X6 1100T (170 EUR) stands ground and is mostly on par with the FX 8150 a lot of the time, that complicates things even more. So where do we need to position the FX 8150 then? I mean, this is supposed to be AMD's fastest processor.

Concluding then. The reality remains that for me personally I would have preferred a faster per core performing AMD quad-core processor rather then an eight-core processor with just 'nice' per core performance. Who knows, for you, that just might not be the case. It's going to be interesting to see what you as an end-user will prefer. Overall though, the AMD FX 8150 is a processor we can recommend for the upper segment of mid-range computers at best.

Θάψιμο από Tom's Hardware

So, letʼs say someone puts Core i5-2500K and FX-8150 in front of you. The Core i5 costs $220 bucks, and the FX runs $245. Which one do you buy?

If itʼs me, Iʼm going with the Core i5. I gave the -2500K a Tomʼs Hardware Recommended Buy award back in January, and I stick by that recommendation almost a year later.

So that brings us to Sapphire who have created an exceptional 6950. There isn't much we haven't covered about this range of card before but Sapphire still managed to impress us with their decision to offer a pre-flashed second BIOS with additional shaders (and performance) available. The card is also overclocked at the factory and has a great bundle including Dirt 3 and from some retailers, Deus EX Human Revolution. Add to this a free HDMI cable, overclocking tool and near silent running and we have the best 6950 we have tested so far.
