Recommended Posts

I think the problem here is, the HDD-SSD speed gap was enormous enough to justify SSD-as-cache (which worked as Intel's RST and Apple's Fusion drive); it made it easy to have the speed of SSDs when SSDs were still too expensive for primary storage. The performance delta there was huge, and you could actually notice the difference between hitting something cached to SSD vs stored on HDD.

Here though, Intel is suggesting using Optane as a cache for larger SSDs. I just don't see the Optane-SSD gap being that large. I doubt it'll have a noticeable performance difference on consumer devices, anyway. Given how far SSD prices have fallen, if I'm building a system and I'm buying an SSD, I'd think it would be more worth it to put extra money into a larger/faster SSD than a cache module (and one that will eat an M.2 slot, no less).

Until we see benchmarks, I'll be highly skeptical of this. Consumers are probably still better off investing extra dollars in getting the fastest SSD they can. If $70 means someone can get a 500GB 960 Evo instead of a cheaper 500GB SSD, that's probably a better performance investment than spending the $70 on this Optane cache.

Μα caching δεν είχαμε και στο παρελθόν;

Intel SRT a.k.a. smart response technology, 99% σίγουρος οτι το deja vu ήταν για αυτό.

In computing, Smart Response Technology (SRT, also called SSD Caching before it was launched) is a proprietary caching mechanism introduced in 2011 by Intel for their Z68 chipset (for the Sandy Bridge–series processors), which allows a SATA solid-state drive (SSD) to function as cache for a (conventional, magnetic) hard disk drive (HDD).

To Deja vu είναι για αυτό:
