I’m an engineer who worked in Technical marketing for a while just to see what it was like. For the most part technical marketers are the least dishonest if they have a good technical understanding of things.

VPs and Product Marketing are often “economical with the truth”. For the numbers illustrating boosting over the advertised limit the conversation probably went something like this:

VP marketing to engineer: I’m really excited about the new processors. I’m hearing great things about the processing things boosting to 4500 megavolts.

Engineer: yes, it’s exciting, don’t you mega hertz?

VP: That’s what I said. What’s the best result you have seen?

Engineer: I was doing some testing, I saw a momentary spike to 4700. It was for a couple of seconds and I can’t reproduce but it was interesting. It might have been because of a bug in a pre-alpha bios that I was running.

VP: But it happened during normal use, right?

Engineer: yes, but we can’t reproduce it.

VP: but it happened. Engineer: well, yes but...

VP: well done, your research is invaluable. Your approach is innovative. I’m going to nominate you for an award as long as you say you have seen this behavior if asked. Actually, your an engineer. Let’s not have you talk to people. Let me write something for you and use it as a marketing quote. No need to write anything yourself, I know exactly what you were trying to do and how it made you feel.

Engineer (understands any further discussion is futile) : ugh thanks I guess.

VP: you are now my go to guy when I need great numbers for marketing purposes! Thanks Jim.

Engineer: my names Mike.

VP. That’s what I said, thanks Jim.
