The VW Golf R 400 performance concept was the main attraction at Volkswagen Groupʼs “Night of the Stars” event hosted by the Beijing Olympic Stadium in China. The Golf R 400 is a 400PS (395hp) all-wheel-drive performance car powered by a 2.0-liter TSI engine derived from the VW Polo WRCʼs racing engine.

Mated to a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, the powerplant produces 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque between 2,400 and 6,000 rpm.

Performance is worthy of a supercar: 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 3.9 seconds, while top speed is 280 km/h (174 mph). Styling-wise, the Golf R 400 concept features significantly wider wings, which VW says are a modern interpretation of the legendary Golf G60 rally car.

Other visible changes are the aggressive front and rear bumpers featuring carbon fiber elements, yellow detailing on the grille and brake calipers, as well as the massive alloy wheels. The interior features racing seats covered with “carbon leather” and Alcantara, yellow stitching and carbon fiber trim.

No details were offered regarding any production plans for the Golf R 400, but Iʼm sure no one would mind if VW built a limited-run super Golf R.
